NYCC 2014 Thanks & The Crazy 8 Cartoon Festival

Crazy 8 Cartoon Festival 2014
There are two things I want to cover this week. First, a huge thank you to everyone who came by my booth this past weekend during the New York Comic Con, and for helping me make this a successful show. Second, I want to remind everyone that this weekend is the Crazy 8 Cartoon Festival in New York City. So, without wasting too much space writing about writing about it, let’s get down to the details. (Scroll toward the bottom of this post for information on the Crazy 8 event.) Read more… ›

Boston Comic Con 2014 – Thank You

Boston Comic Con 2014 tableThis year’s Boston Comic Con was a fantastic event. In fact, it was by far the most successful show I’ve had in five years of exhibiting at comic conventions. Of course, as cliché as it is to say, the truth is it wouldn’t have been such a success without the support of those who stopped by my table, even if it was just to look and say a few kind words about my work.

That said, I want to thank everyone who bought prints, commissions, bookmarks, and especially those who picked up the second edition of Chadhiyana. I hope you enjoy it, and continue reading the graphic novel, Chadhiyana: In the Company of Shadows on chadhiyana.com. If you weren’t at the show, you still have the opportunity to pick up a copy at the Baltimore and New York Comic Cons in the coming months. The comic is also available on IndyPlanet.com (print and digital) and the Inbeon Studios store (digital only). Read more… ›

Boston Comic Con This Weekend, Baltimore Comic-Con One Month Away & the Chadhiyana Second Edition

Chadhiyana 2nd edition coverWell that’s a rather long blog title, but what it says is true. This month I’m finally returning to conventions and public appearances (after nearly a year off), and I’m beginning with the Boston Comic Con this weekend! What’s even more exciting about the weekend is that not only am I speaking on a panel about self-publishing, but the second edition of Chadhiyana will be available for the convention (despite what I wrote in last week’s blog post)!

From Friday through Sunday this weekend, I’ll be in Artist Alley at the Boston Comic Con. As stated, amongst the usual assortment of prints, posters, books and bookmarks (not to mention being available for commissions) on my table will be the new, thirty-six page second edition of Chadhiyana, featuring the original sixteen pages of content and the Prologue of the Chadhiyana graphic novel, Chadhiyana: In the Company of Shadows. A lot has been done to this book to make it the definitive version (including colour corrections which now match almost exactly with my original art), and it looks beautiful. If you haven’t picked up a copy yet, make sure you do. Read more… ›

Need for Speed

J. M. DeSantis workingFor years I’ve kept timesheets for my art-related jobs and projects. I started this practice after doing research about the business end of being a creative professional (you know, the really important stuff no one ever talks or writes about), and I’ve found it quite helpful. Perhaps I’ll write about why another time. For now, I’ll merely state that amongst their many uses, timesheets give me a fairly accurate measure of my work pace. I’ve gotten much faster in the past two years, but frankly, I feel I could be working faster still. So, amongst the many projects I have lined up for the summer, one of my personal goals is to train myself to work even faster–without sacrificing quality, of course. Read more… ›

Reflections on 2013

I’m not a particularly superstitious man. I’ve never been sensitive to black cats, broken mirrors or Friday the 13th, yet I was never able to shake the sense that the day on which I graduated from Pratt Institute had somehow cursed my career as a writer and artist. May 13, 2005 was a sunny day, but it was a Friday. Since then I heard many say how much they enjoy my writing or my art, but it never seemed the vast majority were catching on (especially editors). Given there have been successes along the way, but nothing that I would consider substantial. That said, if ever the curse existed (and if one believes in numerology), the year 2013 has at last broken it. Read more… ›

Update to the Comic Pages Gallery

Chadhiyana: In the Company of ShadowsIt’s been busy, to say the least, while I continue to work on my graphic novel, Chadhiyana: In the Company of Shadows, and with other projects coming in (such as the book cover I alluded to last week). As it is, there’s a lot of new artwork I should be adding to my Art Galleries and perhaps an excerpt from the Prologue of the graphic novel script to add to my Script Writing page. So, for the next few weeks, in between regular blog posts (and some holiday wishes–what with the Holidays coming up and all), I’ll probably be doing a lot of gallery updates again. What’s more, I could really use a break from straight blogging for a bit with all the work I’m juggling right now. Read more… ›
