January is drawing to a close, and that means we’re almost one month into the new year. This past Saturday’s 4th annual Black Comic Book Festival was quite an event. Not only was it well organised and the people friendly, but it was so well attended that the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture was hardly large enough to hold the thousands who came out for the show. In fact so many attended that there was a line to get in for a good portion of the day. That was just wonderful, as there needs to be this kind of support not only for small publishers and independent creators (what solely made up the show), but specifically black creators and characters in comics. 2015 has been a landmark year! I don’t want to sound like I’m bragging, but I can’t help the truth of it. There have been some amazing things that happened this year, some of which I’ve been wanting or working toward for a good portion of my adult life (some since I was a kid, even). From getting a publisher, to moving into a new place and even winding up in the hospital at one point, 2015 was filled with incredible ups and downs. Despite the most recent Gentleman Cthulhu comic I posted (“Giving Thanks” on gentlemancthulhu.com–which, actually, proved popular when Strange-Aeons Magazine re-posted it on their Facebook page), I don’t have a cynical opinion of Thanksgiving. Certainly, its origins are questionable at best, but the way in which its celebrated today I think can be taken separate from its beginnings. Family and friends get together to enjoy a bountiful home cooked meal (some do go out instead, I know) and enjoy (or tolerate) each other’s company. Typically in the winter months I hibernate to some extent. Besides taking the time to enjoy the Holidays and my family and friends, I take a break from public appearances and concentrate on working in my studio exclusively; it’s just such a hectic time of the year. This year, however, I wanted to try something different. I’ve only been off from writing my blog for a week, and yet it feels like forever. So please excuse me as I write off some of the rust. Though I’ve been writing every day, I’m suddenly stumped with the prospect of having to write a blog piece. So things may move in a sort of stream-of-consciousness sort of way. The Baltimore Comic-Con is this weekend (Friday through Saturday) at the Baltimore Convention Center, and (unfortunately) for the first time in four years, I will not be there. Of course, I don’t write that begrudgingly. I’ll be a groomsman for a good, long-time friend of mine who is getting married this weekend. Though I will say it is hard to know I won’t be there this year, especially since I really enjoy both Baltimore and the convention. What’s more, Baltimore Comic-Con seems to be the con where I have the most repeat customers and fans, and my publisher is right nearby in D.C. The summer is coming to an end, and for me, that means returning to my teaching job. There’s a lot I need to have place for my work output to be a well-oiled machine when school starts, plus there’s so little of the time off left to enjoy. Those things considered, I’ve decided to take a little social media and (possible) blog break (some of you may have noticed I didn’t post on Monday or Tuesday). I’m not sure for exactly how long I’ll be taking this break (I may very well be back before school starts on September 8th, but no later than then), but I’ll be hard at work behind the scenes the whole while.
