Reflections on 2014

Chadhiyana Boston Comic Con 2014 sketches

With the holidays coming up, I’ll be taking things a little slow for the next two weeks. For those following my Handlebar Moustache Guide, I’ll be back with the next installment in the New Year. At least I got as far as posting how to curl your moustache, but there are a few other subjects to be covered yet before the guide is complete. In the meanwhile, I’ll be enjoying the holidays and preparing for next year, as there are (I hope and all but expect) some big things coming in 2015. But before we get to that, here’s a look back at 2014.  Read more… ›

New York Comic Con 2014 This Weekend

Just a friendly reminder that tomorrow morning the biggest comic show on the East Coast kicks off with its Professional Day, and amongst the many publishers, distributors and individual creators setting up for the four day show will be yours truly. If you haven’t marked me down in your show planner yet, make sure you do. I will be exhibiting in the Small Press area at Booth 1259, and amongst my usual wares of prints, comics, books and convention sketches will be a couple of new items, including some great giveaways. Overloaded

I had a much different sort of blog piece planned for this week (and half-written already too); however, I have to admit that the present distractions are just too great to write about anything else but the distractions. I’ve been working hard the past couple of weeks to make corrections to the style change and in-progress pages for Chadhiyana: In the Company of Shadows (I’m almost there–really). Though, having lately come off of the Baltimore Comic-Con and being only fifteen days into my second year as a full-time art teacher, I’m not quite settled into my new schedule just yet. New York Comic Con Less Than a Month Away!

In just three short weeks, the 2014 New York Comic Con will be opening for professionals on Thursday, October 9th. Following will be three days of comics, video games, pop culture and of course, Chadhiyana. As in the past few years, I will not be in Artist Alley, but rather you can find me in the Small Press area at booth 1259. So, if you’re attending the show, make sure you add my booth to your convention plans. Read more… ›

Thank You Baltimore Comic-Con 2014 & an Announcement About 2015

First and foremost, I want to give a huge thanks to everyone who stopped by my Artist Alley table at the Baltimore Comic-Con this weekend past. It was quite a show this year–exhausting even. With the new Chadhiyana t-shirts, a new display set-up and my lovely booth girl (my girlfriend, Nadia), this was the best year yet. Yet it was equally exhausting–so much so, I fell further behind than ever on the most recent Chadhiyana: In the Company of Shadows page. Still, thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s show a success. I’ve enjoyed doing the Baltimore Comic-Con for the past three years, and hope to continue doing so in the future. However, I do have some unfortunate news concerning next year’s show. Read more… ›

Boston Comic Con 2014 – Thank You

Boston Comic Con 2014 tableThis year’s Boston Comic Con was a fantastic event. In fact, it was by far the most successful show I’ve had in five years of exhibiting at comic conventions. Of course, as cliché as it is to say, the truth is it wouldn’t have been such a success without the support of those who stopped by my table, even if it was just to look and say a few kind words about my work.

That said, I want to thank everyone who bought prints, commissions, bookmarks, and especially those who picked up the second edition of Chadhiyana. I hope you enjoy it, and continue reading the graphic novel, Chadhiyana: In the Company of Shadows on chadhiyana.com. If you weren’t at the show, you still have the opportunity to pick up a copy at the Baltimore and New York Comic Cons in the coming months. The comic is also available on IndyPlanet.com (print and digital) and the Inbeon Studios store (digital only). Read more… ›

Boston Comic Con This Weekend, Baltimore Comic-Con One Month Away & the Chadhiyana Second Edition

Chadhiyana 2nd edition coverWell that’s a rather long blog title, but what it says is true. This month I’m finally returning to conventions and public appearances (after nearly a year off), and I’m beginning with the Boston Comic Con this weekend! What’s even more exciting about the weekend is that not only am I speaking on a panel about self-publishing, but the second edition of Chadhiyana will be available for the convention (despite what I wrote in last week’s blog post)!

From Friday through Sunday this weekend, I’ll be in Artist Alley at the Boston Comic Con. As stated, amongst the usual assortment of prints, posters, books and bookmarks (not to mention being available for commissions) on my table will be the new, thirty-six page second edition of Chadhiyana, featuring the original sixteen pages of content and the Prologue of the Chadhiyana graphic novel, Chadhiyana: In the Company of Shadows. A lot has been done to this book to make it the definitive version (including colour corrections which now match almost exactly with my original art), and it looks beautiful. If you haven’t picked up a copy yet, make sure you do. Read more… ›

Just Some Random Musings & News

I have to be honest. For the first time in a while, I’m a little stuck. I have no idea what to write for today’s blog post. Sure, I could finish a number of the half-written blog pieces I keep on the back burner for moments like these, but at the moment, my head just isn’t there. Sometimes, it’s best to write about whatever’s on your mind at the moment–just to get the brain juices flowing. It’s probably a symptom of being distracted by a few deadlines I have to meet in the next two weeks and the upcoming Boston Comic Con (August 8 – 10, 2014). This is a typical thing that happens before a convention. So, I’ll just embrace it rather than fight it. Here goes. Read more… ›

Need for Speed

J. M. DeSantis workingFor years I’ve kept timesheets for my art-related jobs and projects. I started this practice after doing research about the business end of being a creative professional (you know, the really important stuff no one ever talks or writes about), and I’ve found it quite helpful. Perhaps I’ll write about why another time. For now, I’ll merely state that amongst their many uses, timesheets give me a fairly accurate measure of my work pace. I’ve gotten much faster in the past two years, but frankly, I feel I could be working faster still. So, amongst the many projects I have lined up for the summer, one of my personal goals is to train myself to work even faster–without sacrificing quality, of course. Read more… ›

More Than Expected

It’s difficult to know where to start, not for a lack of having something to write this week, but rather there’s been a lot happening worth writing about. So much happened within the last week that I wound up working through the weekend, forcing me to take the day off today (other than writing this blog piece, of course). At last the work is done (in a manner of speaking–I’ve a lot more to do this summer), and I can take a breather. That said, for you the reader (especially my Chadhiyana fans) there’s some exciting new things happening. Read more… ›
